"Go for the Gold in Your Business"
With the Winter Olympics drawing to a close in Vancouver it is hard to not be inspired by the thrill of victory and the victories over defeat. The Olympians are the best of the best. Yet in each event there are only three medalists and one gold medalist. What distinguishes the winners from the rest? What lessons from the Olympics can be applied to building your gold medal business?
Top Five Ways to achieve excellence and become a Gold Medalist in your business:
1. Commitment.
Each athlete has demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment. Many have trained for these events since they were children. The hours, years, and decades of training all leading up to this moment; consistently working towards the dream of winning a gold medal. Each athlete experiences set-backs, injuries, and doubts yet they persevere. Lindsey Vonn, who won the gold medal in women's downhill, arrived in Vancouver with an injury and yet delivered the run of her life to take home the gold. She did not let the injury stop her, she was committed to making her dream a reality. Building a gold medal business takes a similar level of commitment. A willingness to continue on and preserver through the upsets, challenges, economic conditions, and doubts.
2. Attitude.
Gold medal athletes have an optimistic and positive perspective. The have to go into the competition knowing that they will do their best and anything is possible. They have no control over their competition or how their competition is going to perform, the snow or ice conditions, or who the judges are. They can only control their mental focus and their performance. To be a gold medalist in your business attitude is everything. Your attitude during your victories and more importantly your attitude towards your defeats. Your attitude toward yourself, your customers and their feedback; your attitude towards your employees. The level at which you are are willing to maintain your energy, focus, and attitude impacts your ability to successfully build your gold medal business.
3. Training.
There is not a single athlete that arrived at the games that does not have a coach. Each athlete has trained and practiced their sport for years. What makes one athlete able to execute more effectively than another? Their dedication and willingness to take their training seriously. Their ability to listen to the coaches, accept the feedback they receive, and put that feedback into practice. They each have made a commitment to further develop their skill and found outside sources to teach them the skills they need to learn and grow. To be a gold medal business owner it is important to regularly assess your strengths and your areas for further develope. Search out resources that will support you in developing those skills through books and classes. Find mentors, teachers, and coaches that will provide you with the feedback to grow to the next level. Take what you learn and put it into action to grow your gold medal business.
4. Experience.
Of all the Gold Medal winners at the Vancouver Olympics, all but ten percent of the athletes are Olympic veterans. In becoming a gold medal athlete, experience matters. When an athlete has prior experience at the olympics they appeared more relaxed, are better able to maintain their focus, manage their stress, and deliver a winning performance. The same is true to be a gold medal business owner. With time and experience you are able to better anticipate challenges and eliminate those challenges more quickly. You are able to set clear and precise goals with the prior experience of knowing how to make those goals a reality. You have spent the time developing your skills and knowledge of your business and industry. You have the knowledge and experience to stay motivated. You have experienced the rewards of staying the course and seeing the race through to the end.
5. Go the extra mile.
Olympic athletes are highly motivated to succeed and are willing to do what others are not. Going the extra mile is what distinguishes the golf medal athlete from the rest. That extra practice, pushing through the pain, overcoming set backs, and pushing to the finish. As a gold medal business owner it means a willingness to go the extra mile to deliver exceptional value, quality, and service. Looking for ways to bring that level of excellence into our daily lives, business practices, our product or service, and raising the bar for our employees.
